Edgedancer

by Brandon Sanderson

Three years ago, Lift asked a goddess to stop her from growing older—a wish she believed was granted. Now, in Edgedancer, the barely teenage nascent Knight Radiant finds that time stands still for no one. Although the young Azish emperor granted her safe haven from an executioner she knows only as Darkness, court life is suffocating the free-spirited Lift, who can’t help heading to Yeddaw when she hears the relentless Darkness is there hunting people like her with budding powers. The downtrodden in Yeddaw have no champion, and Lift knows she must seize this awesome responsibility.

Overview

Edgedancer is a novella set between Words of Radiance and Oathbringer, originally published in the Arcanum Unbounded collection before receiving a standalone release.

The story follows Lift, the irreverent young Radiant who can metabolize food directly into Stormlight. After the events at the Shattered Plains, Lift travels to the city of Yeddaw in Azir, tracking the mysterious figure Nale — Herald of Justice — who has been hunting and killing anyone showing signs of Radiant powers.

Themes

  • Compassion vs. law — Lift’s instinctive empathy against Nale’s rigid justice
  • Growing up — Lift’s resistance to change and her wish to stay the same
  • The forgotten — Lift’s focus on the people everyone else overlooks

Why Read It

At 272 pages, this is a compact, character-driven interlude that provides essential context for Lift’s role in Oathbringer and beyond. Her voice is unique in the series — funny, raw, and deeply human despite her protests otherwise.

“She didn’t steal things. She just took what people didn’t appreciate enough.”
